The Judiciary Act of 1789
One of the things Washington focused on when he took office was the judiciary system. Back then, the government of the U.S had just started, and the judicial branch hadn't been developed. Using the Judiciary Act of 1789, Washington created the Supreme Court. It had six members; the Chief Justice and five Associate Justices.
The Cabinet and Executive Offices
Washington also created the first cabinet. Some of the more dominant members of his cabinet included Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. He created the following executive departments and officials:
- The United States Department of State led by the Secretary of State. He appointed Thomas Jefferson for this job.
- The United States Department of the Treasury led by the Secretary of the Treasury. Washington appointed Alexander Hamilton for this job
- The United States Department of War led by the Secretary of War. He appointed Henry Knox for this job.
- The Attorney General did not lead an executive department. Washington appointed Edmund Randolph.
- The Postmaster General led the United States Post Office Department. Samuel Osgood was appointed for this job.
